First is how robust the sampler itself is. There are two components to consider here. But definitely there are a number of 3rd party options that are an upgrade over the built-in synths. If you get into multi-instruments then you could build a cool synth by layering and combining multiple instances of Mai Tai & Mojito (even PresenceXT). Instruments are also good: SampleOne and Impact XT. Learn to use them and save yourself a lot of money not buying this and that 3rd party compressor, limiter etc. Studio One's effect plug-ins are good to great. Do you mean effect plugins, instrument plugins, or both? Looking at the comments there is some confusion about which plugins you mean.
